The Palio of Siena is…
With the Palio di Siena we also want to briefly introduce you to the city that has always hosted it: Siena, one of the most elegant and historic Italian cities linked to horses and the emotions it arouses.
Siena, in Tuscany, is famous for its splendid medieval brick buildings and in the last few lines you will still read about Siena.
Now let’s talk about the Palio of Siena

The Palio of Siena is run in Piazza del Campo, the central square with the characteristic fan shape, where the Palazzo Pubblico is located and the Torre del Mangia, a beautiful and thin tower of the XIV century from which you can enjoy a wonderful view on the seventeen historical districts of the city.
The Palio di Siena, which takes place on 2 July and 16 August each year, is a race between horses mounted without saddle between the different districts (each district has its horse) which monopolizes attention on the city for several days.

This is because the Palio is not just a historical event or the revisitation of an ancient medieval joust, but it is the expression of the ancient and deeply rooted Sienese tradition.
In Siena The Palio is not an event that can be realized in a few days, but it is the result of an accurate and obsessive organization on the part of the districts of the city, which conduct an intense social and associative life throughout the year.
The Palio of Siena – The seventeen districts
In Siena there are seventeen districts (Aquila, Bruco, Chiocciola, Civetta, Drago, Giraffa, Istrice, Leocorno, Lupa, Nicchio, Oca, Onda, Pantera, Selva, Tartuca, Torre and Valdimontone) but only ten of these can participate in the Palio and see why.

The seven districts that did not take part in the previous year’s race will race at each race and three of the ten districts that had already raced a year before will be lottery drawing so that the districts that can take part in the event are always ten.
The draws take place about a month before the prize and the draw for the August Palio usually takes place the Sunday after the Palio in July.
The Palio of Siena – The welfare of the horses
There is a strong controversy on the part of animal welfare associations that consider the competition extremely risky for the life of horses and, also due to public pressure, in recent years the Municipality has multiplied its efforts to guarantee a high level of safety and veterinary support.

The Palio of Siena – A brief mention of the city of Siena
Now that you are aware of the Palio di Siena, stay with us for a few minutes to discover the elegance of Siena, its palaces, its unique neighborhoods in the world that await visitors to offer them an exciting and unforgettable experience.
No other city keeps alive the cultural and civil heritage of the Middle Ages like Siena, with the Palio and the 17 Contradas, with its masterpieces of art and the historical center similar to a widespread museum.
Siena organizes over 600 events each year, often of extraordinary quality as summer music festivals and large exhibitions.
In Siena, crafts, gastronomy and wines reach excellence and bring a message of culture and tradition.
This is Siena, the capital of the Gothic that, since 1995, is part of the Unesco world heritage.
