The Sardinian Cavalcade. The festival of beauty.
Among the recommendations of Club Cavallo Italia, always looking for the best events dedicated to the horse to propose to those who love horses and their elegance, you cannot miss the Sardinian Cavalcade.
The Sardinian Cavalcade is one of our suggestions but, if you want, in this page you can suggest us an advice that you would like to read. Thanks.
The Sardinian Cavalcade has earned the title of “Beauty Festival” thanks to its unique and fascinating features that have remained unchanged since the first edition of 1711, when the town council of Sassari wanted to pay homage to King Philip V of Spain, characteristics that have it inserted in the celebrations of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
And if you too love horses and their elegance as we love them, visit the Club Cavallo Italia Friends page.
Thank you. We waiting for you.
The Sardinian Cavalcade…
The Sardinian Cavalcade was officially born in 1899 when King Umberto I, accompanied by his wife Margerita of Savoy, inaugurated the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II in front of about three thousand people in traditional dress, all coming from the province of Sassari.
Today you can relive the magical atmosphere of the Sardinian Cavalcade on the penultimate Sunday of each month of May, witnessing an unforgettable show of richness and majesty, an extraordinary spring festival, the largest secular event in all of Sardinia.
Sounds and colors, music and dances, jewels and costumes join the tenor singers who alternate their rhythm with the trampling of horses’ hooves while riders and amazons pay homage to the spectators by offering breads, sweets and first fruits.
In the Sardinian Cavalcade parade the knights of Sedilo and the sartiglieri of Oristano, the Mamuthones and the Issohadores of Mamoiada and the Boes and Merdules of Ottana capture attention with their masks imbued with charm and mystery while the launeddas del Sarrabus surround the procession.
During the Sardinian Cavalcade you experience a unique and unforgettable atmosphere since the morning with the parade about two kilometers long in the streets of the historic center with floats decorated with flowers that precede 65 folk groups and about thirty on horseback.
All wear the traditional dress of the city of origin, often enriched with embroideries and jewels in gold and silver filigree, while the afternoon is reserved for pariglie, equestrian rides in which the bravest riders perform spectacular acrobatics on horses in the running.
In the evening, in the central Piazza Italia, you can listen to songs and see traditional dances, on the notes of launeddas, songs with tenores and accordions, up to night.
The Sardinian Cavalcade has been consolidated over the years up to an annual frequency, becoming a folkloristic parade of traditional Sardinian clothes, an authentic expression of Sardinian culture that invites you to discover the strong sense of the Sardinian community, its natural and cultural beauties, craft and food and wine.
During the Sardinian Cavalcade you live like in a living museum made of women, men and children with traditional clothes, bodices, skirts, veiled hats and capes.
