The Great Ribot
Probably the Largest Horse of the Italian Horse Racing
The Great Ribot was born in England in Newmarket, in 1952, by Tenerani and Romanella, was bred by Federico Tesio and his interpreter throughout his career was the jockey Enrico Camici.
Owes his great fame to his unbeaten throughout his career: a good sixteen consecutive victories in the most important Grand Prix disputed in Europe, including two Arc de Triomphe and an edition of King George.
Ribot had a chest of incredible depth and had to do a lap of about twenty centimeters longer than normal!
Camici, his faithful jockey, said that “his shoulders are perfectly inclined and in the gallop jumps he doubles: he becomes a ocelot”.
Now a break
There are many anecdotes about the great champion.
Here are some: in the Gran Criterium preceded Gail, of the Race of Soldo, only one head and Camici, his jockey, was justified: “It was my fault, I tried to stall to save him but Ribot wants to go: the timing not supports neither in the running nor in the exercise “.
One morning Ribot performs in front of his wingman, the faithful horse Magistris, in a happy acrobatic procuring a stretch to the left front.
The mild and good Magistris disapproves of him with his eyes…
He was rebelled against the performances
The Great Ribot he was rebelled against the performances, he hated them considering them as farces (where are the opponents? he probably wondered…) and at the exhibition at the Capannelle Racetrack in Rome he meditated revenge.
Camici slowed him down and Ribot made him fall on the lawn without much compliment!
Ribot died on the night of April 28, 1972 in Lexington (Kentuky), where he was rented, and the Role of “Sultan” who have all the great horses at the end of his career.
This made him even more quirky and surly and it was no possible to bring him back to Italy, neither by ship nor by air, as no company would have assured him also because the Commander of a ship or a plane, if he had become dangerous in the voyage, would have to take him down.
In his latest gallop, the Emanuele Filiberto Prize, Ribot humiliates Botticelli, the best horse in Italy.
On one occasion Ribot imposed itself with a fractional margin (of a head on Gail in the Gran Criterium) and in the whole career it has totaled distances for 105 lengths, an average of over six and a half lengths for each race!
Undefeated winner of 16 races, he has not participated, due to lack of inscriptions and an accident, to the classic races for the Three Years.
His extraordinary victory at the Arc De Triomphe in 1955. Good vision.
Just a moment, please
